Fingerprinting is used to verify an individual’s criminal background and is the most accurate and widely-accepted method for conducting background checks in Canada and abroad. It is commonly required for various purposes, including employment with federal, provincial, municipal, or private organizations, foreign travel, work permits, visas, US waivers, Canadian citizenship, permanent residency, US immigration, and US visas.

Each time you request a Canadian criminal background check from the RCMP, you need to submit a new set of fingerprints because they are used for a specific check and are destroyed once the process is complete. Neither our office nor the RCMP retains your fingerprints after issuing the certificate. Therefore, you must provide a new set of fingerprints for each RCMP criminal background check request.

No, the RCMP background check process cannot be expedited. Due to the high volume of requests received daily, there is no way to prioritize or speed up the processing time. The official certificate is mailed via Canada Post’s regular mail service. To avoid delays, please ensure you complete the fingerprinting process well in advance of any deadlines.

Digital fingerprinting uses a certified optical scanner to capture your fingerprints, which avoids ink residue and provides a fast, convenient, and highly accurate process. This method is commonly preferred by authorities for immigration and employment purposes.
On the other hand, the ink-and-roll method involves using ink to capture fingerprints on paper. This traditional approach may still be required for certain applications. At Frontier One Inc, we provide both digital and ink-and-roll fingerprinting services to accommodate different requirements.

No, Surrey Fingerprint Services is a private company accredited by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) to capture and submit fingerprints for civil purposes. We do not process fingerprints or have access to the Canadian Criminal Record database. We are not affiliated with local police, the RCMP, or any government entities beyond our authorization to capture and submit fingerprints.

There are two types of background checks available:
Name-based Background Check: This type of check is performed by some agencies and local police using only your name and date of birth to search the National Criminal Repository Database. Results can be quicker (within 24 hours), but because it relies solely on name and date of birth, there’s a higher risk of false matches with other individuals. Many requesting authorities or employers do not accept this type of check due to these risks.
Fingerprint-based Background Check: Conducted by RCMP-accredited agencies (including some local police), this process involves capturing your fingerprints and submitting them to the RCMP. The RCMP then checks your unique fingerprints, name, and date of birth against the National Criminal Repository Database. The standard processing time is about 3 business days, though it can take up to 120 days if there is a prior criminal record. The official certificate is mailed to your address via regular mail, with delivery typically taking 1-2 weeks depending on Canada Post.
While both types of checks can fulfill the same purpose, the fingerprint-based process is more stringent and widely accepted by authorities. Be sure to confirm with the requesting authority or organization which type of check they require.

Why don’t you provide Biometrics Collection services?” dsm_content=”
Biometrics Collection: This involves capturing your fingerprints during your immigration application process, which are then stored in the RCMP’s database for future identification verification. Only the Government of Canada, specifically Service Canada, can perform this service. Private agencies, including ours, are not authorized to conduct biometrics collection. This process is specifically handled by Immigration Canada (IRCC) for immigration purposes.
Fingerprint-based Background Check: This process involves capturing your fingerprints and sending them to the RCMP for a criminal background check. It is used for various purposes, such as immigration, employment, and adoption. After the check is completed, your fingerprints are destroyed immediately. This service is available through accredited private agencies, including ours, and is used for different purposes than biometrics collection.

Each fingerprinting process is treated as a separate application by the RCMP, and a fee is charged for each one, regardless of whether it’s from the same individual or different individuals.
We do offer one complimentary re-take in the rare event that your fingerprints are rejected by the RCMP due to low quality. If this occurs, we will notify you within 48 business hours and discuss your options. However, you will need to pay the RCMP processing fee of $25 again, as the RCMP does not waive this fee.

For the RCMP Criminal Record Check: We capture your fingerprints and submit them electronically to the RCMP. Once the check is completed, the RCMP will send the police report to you or a designated third party.
For fingerprint cards to be sent abroad (like C-216C, FD-258, etc.): After taking your fingerprints, either digitally or with ink, we will provide you with the fingerprint card. You will then need to forward this card to the relevant organization in the foreign country for their police check.

Although we submit your fingerprints electronically to the RCMP immediately after your appointment, the RCMP requires additional time to complete the background check and issue the certificate. Name-Based Background Check: This type of check uses your name and date of birth to search the Canadian Police Information Centre (CPIC) system. It provides a quick overview but is less specific and can lead to mismatches due to common names or similar birth dates.
Fingerprint-Based Background Check: Known as the gold standard, this check uses your fingerprints to search through the National Repository of Criminal Records managed by the Canadian Criminal Real Time Identification Services (CCRTIS) of the RCMP. It offers a higher level of accuracy and is widely accepted for various official purposes.
Name-based checks are not as broadly accepted as fingerprint-based checks for many applications, so it’s important to confirm the type required for your specific needs.
” dsm_child_open_font_icon=”!||divi||400″ dsm_child_close_font_icon=”"||divi||400″ _builder_version=”4.27.0″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][/dsm_faq_child][dsm_faq_child dsm_title=” Why should I opt for a fingerprint-based background check over a name-based one?” dsm_content=”
Name-based background checks, conducted through the Canadian Police Information Centre (CPIC) system, rely on your name and date of birth. However, common names, nicknames, or name changes can complicate identity verification, leading to potential inaccuracies.
Fingerprint-based criminal record checks, conducted by the RCMP’s Canadian Criminal Real Time Identification Services (CCRTIS), offer a higher level of accuracy. This method is preferred because it uniquely identifies individuals based on their fingerprints, eliminating the issues associated with name-based checks.
For many applications, only the fingerprint-based check is accepted, so it’s crucial to verify the type of check required before proceeding.

Criminal Record Check (Background Check): This check identifies any criminal records in the National Repository of Criminal Records and is commonly used for various purposes.
Criminal Record and Judicial Matters Check: This includes everything in the Criminal Record Check plus additional information on outstanding entries such as warrants, charges, peace bonds, judicial orders, probation, and prohibition orders, as well as absolute and conditional discharges for 1 or 3 years respectively.
Vulnerable Sector Check: This involves a name-based check conducted by local police and includes a review for record suspensions related to sexual offences. It is specifically required for individuals working with or interacting with vulnerable populations, such as children, the elderly, or individuals with disabilities.

If you are submitting through an agent rather than directly to the board, live scan fingerprints are typically sufficient.
To ensure compliance, please bring any instruction letter you have so we can determine the appropriate type of fingerprinting service needed. Live scan fingerprints are generally preferred due to their clarity and convenience, unless the instructions specifically request inked fingerprints.

If the private company requires a certified Criminal Record Check from the RCMP, we can help with that by processing your fingerprints. If a name-based check from local police is sufficient, you may opt for that as well. However, name-based checks have limitations and may not be accepted by all employers, so it’s a good idea to confirm their requirements to avoid potential issues.

Once you have the original fingerprint cards and any required documents, mail them to our office in Canada. We will then handle the electronic submission to the RCMP.
